This morning I was listening to my of my iPod derived CDs and heard Dr. John’s original song, “Cover of the Rolling Stone,” and it got me thinking of how music really is the soundtrack of our lives. Every time I hear an old song, I pretty much know the year that it was released and what I was doing. I enjoy listening to some of my favorite old songs, but I also like hearing new ones too. I subscribe to Sirius for Howard Stern and listen to several of Sirius’ current “hit” channels like “The 90s and Now.” I sometimes wonder what songs will resonate with me 10 years from now that I am listening to today. What song will remind me of melslife? I am not into Rap, but enjoy some Rap. There are songs that make me happy – some make me sad – and some give me energy. Yesterday I met a mergers and acquisitions specialist who is building a new media platform utilizing math algorithms and key word purchases to drive traffic to his sites. It was an amazing lunch. I admired his creativity and forethought. He introduced himself as a numbers guy, which is usually the first sign that someone has more depth than they represent. Like I mentioned a few days ago, New Media is like the Wild West – someone or a group of people are going to find gold. Usually it’s not the people who find the gold, but rather the people that support the industry of monetizing the gold. New Media, television and film share many things in common, but the most common denominator is that no one knows anything. It’s all about luck, timing, aggregating audience, and public acceptance. When you see an idea come together, it’s amazing. This thinking reminds me of Bruce Springsteen’s “Better Days.”
